Illegal immigration has been a trendy topic for as long as we can all remember, when will it come to an end? Many believe that illegal “aliens” should be sent back to their original country; while others believe they should be able to stay and be given citizenship or at least some rights. Negative comments are heard all the time about illegal immigrants such as that they steal jobs, come and use public services, use welfare, and are criminals. Illegal immigrants are not welcome in the United States and are frowned upon by a majority of citizens for not being able to contribute to the country in bigger ways, but how can this be possible if they lack the resources needed to be successful? Even though illegal immigrants don’t have a perfect life here in the United States due to racism among other things, they still try and do their part. They are not “lazy”; as a matter of fact, all those “illegal aliens” are the same ones that do all the jobs legal citizens refuse to do. According to Hanson, illegal immigrants don’t make a huge impact on the economy; however, they do benefit the fields that include intensive work like: farming, construction, low end manufacturing, the hospitality industry, and building cleaning and maintenance (2010). Legal citizens in the United States can’t say illegal immigrants steal jobs if they’re not willing to work in those fields themselves- unless those are the jobs they would prefer and illegal immigrants took the more prestigious jobs. While many don’t see how illegal immigrants impact the economy, the government enjoys more tax revenue and employers enjoy higher income. “Since immigrants (including many illegals) pay federal income and withholding taxes, the federal government enjoys an increase in revenue” (Hanson, 2007). Employers relish in the higher income they receive when they pay illegal immigrants lower because it causes their businesses to be more productive (Hanson, 2010).
