Satire About Homecoming

Homecoming
This is my last homecoming. I don’t know how I feel about it. I think I’m going to miss homecoming but yet O’Neill school isn’t really out going for homecoming. Which I don’t understand every school I’ve been to loves homecoming and mostly everyone dresses up which was so much fun. I think everyone should get into it and make homecoming worth it.

Illness
I have this disease I think its called senioritis. I just have a lack of motivation and I’m really lazy this year. I don’t know what to do or what it could be. Maybe I need some help or I need to graduate. This year feels like its going so slow and I don’t understand I just want to be done and get on with life.

Poet Bruce Dawe wrote the Poem Homecoming, in 1968, depicting the returning of deceased soldiers from the Vietnam War to their homes. The poem was written to convey the common theme of the horror and destruction of war, it’s main message being the last line, “They’re bringing them home, now, too late, too early.” Meaning that they are returning too late, too early in their lives, as these soldiers were most likely in their early twenties or late teens. This poem has a subtle suggestion, or connotation of disgust with those in power and who caused and initiated the war.…

With her best friend Ann Stoker she would also hang around the Fleet at Portsmouth and Southsea. (A photograph of the two, both inexplicably in boiler suits, shows a hefty young Monica not displayed to best advantage next to the more petite Ann.) They had to avoid her brother Bunny if he was in port and likewise her Uncle Gerald, brother of Henry, who was captain of the battleship Repulse. With another friend she used to drive up to Oxford and Cambridge, a wind-up gramophone in the back of her Sunbeam Special sports car playing Jeepers Creepers, and go to balls and parties in students' rooms and be very jolly. One night, somewhat the worse for wear, Monica somehow got her long-nosed Sunbeam tightly jammed in the driveway at number 52 and was unable to back it out after sobering up.…

In the piece, “Back to School Satire,” the author gets his point across in an entertaining way, but is also contemplative about it. There are many times through this piece that I apprehend what points the author is trying to express to us as an audience, however, he goes too far with some of his comparisons. To start off with, in the second paragraph the author tries to humour us by saying, “Throwing one’s racquet at an opponent after a pingpong match build good character and strengthens the opponent,” then also says, “what’s more, if the opponent has glasses, it would be beneficial for the glasses to break.” Even though this quote does show how it is at a public school it seems to be very immature for the author to say and seems like he…

Hey everyone. It's Badger. Rafter is out for a bit thanks to a project for a public speaking class, so I'm kind of the only one who's free to post for the moment. So here's my post: Once again, I've noticed my random paddling crews giving me odd looks for asking to sit in an strangely specific section of the raft: left-hand tube near the stern of the raft, usually at the last thwart in the back. People who don't know me seem to assume that I'm sitting there because it's the safest.…

    Satire In Brave New World

Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…

The use of satire has been developed into an action of ridicule that is fading away from the primary purpose. Early satire geniusly used parody as a form of enforcing a change be made within the issues being discussed, however over time this parody has occurred with no primary purpose other than entertainment. With the shift from purposeful input on subjects to constant criticism and humor, satire has become less effective. Gladwell claims modern day satire does not criticise today's views, however modern day satire does criticized however it shifts the attention from the issues to focusing on the humor which reinforces peoples varied views. Modern satire has developed into a reinforcer towards bias and prejudice through it’s ambiguous ideal.…

Occasionally I look back on my high school experience and realize I never did a keg stand at a party, I never skipped class to get stoned, and I also never got the guy I had a crush on for three years. Instead, I was studying for that AP government exam, standing in front of my fellow science club members talking about how we can restore our local creek, or working on hitting fastballs for softball. When I catch myself feeling as though I missed out on stereotypical high school or even college experiences I watch a movie not just any movie but a teen comedy. My ideal teen comedy has a group of friends who are about to graduate high school or already have that feel like they missed out on the clique high school experience, in order to gain some…

From warring tribes in Africa during the dawn of man to the great Empires of Greece and Persia warfare has always been present, whether this war is for defense of a homeland and families, to conquest for more power and wealth or freedom from persecution and oppression. These forces drive mankind and have pushed us technologically and socially. While war may be a central aspect of mankind it is something that causes deep felt feelings and views that bring forward strong emotions in many people.
