When I first read No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre my immediate thoughts were thoughts of life choices, after life, regrets, torture, and life versus death. The play brought a sense of helplessness and confusion. When I first read this play I pictured a dark eerie room bare, with three sofas, and nothing more. I could hear the sighs of desperation and defeat throughout the building, and I felt the feeling of being trapped with no escape. Due to my first responses, I hoped that the audience would also feel these same type of responses, which further helped me in my choice of doing this play.
Theme:
Cepeda, Eva. My own image. Digital image.Web. 28 Sept. 2016. This play has the theme of choices and consequences. This is emphasized throughout the play in the way the characters past is constantly brought up and they are reminded of it. They have to admit what they have done and face it.
Style:
This play is written in the style of Absurdism. This play can be called an existential play and a philosophical drama. The most important thing about absurdism is that nothing matters, death is taken very lightly. The set is very minimalistic, but I really want my audience to pay attention to the acting and the message the play is sending, rather than the set, because when the set is super elaborate it can be distracting and take away from the bigger story. It is stated in the play that the furniture is second empire furniture, therefor that is the type of furniture I would like to get so that the lines make sense. I want the play to have a sort of eerie atmosphere so I would like the lights to dimmed when the play
