In order to satisfy Pennsylvania’s residents and offer them elegant, yet affordable formalwear for special occasion, Ralph Sarno, an Italian master suit maker, immigrated to United States and founded “Sarno’s Custom Tailor Shop” in Scranton. The company underwent several rebranding plans, until it adopted its current name “Sarno & Son Tuxedo”. One huge influence on the name and business approach was Ralph’s son, Larry, joining the business in 1960. Additionally, the son built a chain of 11 stores extending from Williamsport to Syracuse, NY. In 1978, Mark, Larry’s son, joined the company and his idea was to shift from a retail shop to a wholesale supplier of tuxedos. Eight years later, Larry’s daughter, Nancy joined the family trade, by insuring proper function of the accounting and financial activities of the business. What started as a small custom tailoring shop, is now the most thriving business in Scranton in its third generation, with 40 highly visible store locations on the Eastern Seaboard, which are the leaders in service and style for formal wear. Sarno & Son Tuxedo is also part of the Savvi Formalwear cooperative with over 500+ stores coast to

Intern Nation by author Ross Perlin analyzes the current state of internships in astoundingly immensedetail. In specific, Perlin focuses on the variety of internships, including “the good, the bad, and the ugly; the paid and the unpaid; the ostensibly academic and the completely untethered; part-time internships lasting a few weeks and full-time ones last a year” (XVI). These elements are described through first-hand accounts; for example, the interns at Disney World and the government interns on Capitol Hills. These elements are also described through in-depth investigation; for example, the 18 percent of interns who work without pay or the evidence of companies and government organizations firing full-time paid staff and replacing them with…

This year at Roxbury Latin how many of you have worn a suit that you bought after going to a store and merely trying it on and subsequently purchasing it because you fit into a certain range of measurements. This in 1820 would have been a novel concept, for the fine clothing business was exclusively reserved for the upper classes of Boston society. This was due to large amounts of work and skill that went into making a custom suit. The process consisted of: basic measurement taking, the original cutting and stitching, the first fitting and then the final adjustments before the suit would finally be sold to the customer. This process lowered the general production of suits and vicariously made the costs extremely high.…
