In order to satisfy Pennsylvania’s residents and offer them elegant, yet affordable formalwear for special occasion, Ralph Sarno, an Italian master suit maker, immigrated to United States and founded “Sarno’s Custom Tailor Shop” in Scranton. The company underwent several rebranding plans, until it adopted its current name “Sarno & Son Tuxedo”. One huge influence on the name and business approach was Ralph’s son, Larry, joining the business in 1960. If prior to Larry, Sarno’s Custom Tailor Shop was personally designing and creating tuxedos corresponding to people’s order, by late 1970, Larry expanded the business by including alternations, dry cleaning, custom suit making, tuxedo rentals and sales. Additionally, the son built a chain of 11 stores extending from Williamsport to Syracuse, NY. In 1978, Mark, Larry’s son, joined the company and his idea was to shift from a retail shop to a wholesale supplier of tuxedos. Eight years later, Larry’s daughter, Nancy joined the family trade, by insuring proper function of the accounting and financial activities of the business. What started as a small custom tailoring shop, is now the most thriving business in Scranton in its third generation, with 40 highly visible store locations on the Eastern Seaboard, which are the leaders in service and style for formal wear.
