The Role Of Sarge In 'Shattered'

Jacques or better known as Sarge is a middle to old aged man taking on one of the main character roles in the novel “Shattered” by Eric Walters. Sarge is a more intimidating and dangerous character. The reasoning behind that is because of his past being a peacekeeper in the Rwandan genocide also because of some actions he will do like fighting or threatening people with his large physical stature. Sarge also does not dress very well because of money issues and possibly because of his feeling of not caring what people think about him. Sarge does talk about having a family as well in the book before he went off to Rwanda but is no longer with them which may be another reason that he doesn't care what people think about him or his choices because …show more content…
Sarges daily life is very boring and slow with his main habits being going to the Club for his dinner that he needs to survive, searching for any possible food to share with his fellow homeless people ,carrying a lead pipe to protect himself and his addiction to drugs and alcohol which also may be a factor in feeling of not caring. Which leads me to believe Sarge is a very generous person giving up what he has so he doesn't have to see anyone even get close to what he saw people go through in Rwanda which shows he values the well being other. Sarge is also very knowledgeable and open to what happened in Rwanda telling Ian all about it when Ian was interested in it, that shows Sarge also has a great attribute of the ability to teach. Sarge kept nothing a secret with Ian or anyone telling people anything and everything they wanted to know which shows another one of his attributes honesty. Even when honesty can turn bad on him to the point to where he becomes rude like when Ian suggested a detox but Sarge got angry becuase he didnt think he needed
