Sarah's Argumentative Essay: Personal Narrative

Evaluation In my narrative essay, my best friend tried to persuade me to audition for our school’s musical. In this situation, the rhetor is Sarah and the audience is me. Sarah’s main argument was that I would regret my decision later if I chose not to audition. The persuasion technique Sarah emphasized most strongly was pathos. Sarah began her first argument by saying she and I would spend at least an hour together after school. This argument would be considered pathos because it appealed to me emotionally. She used logos when she told me that we’d make a lot of friends while rehearsing for the play. This argument is logos because it was based off of probability. It was more than likely that we would meet people and make friends while we worked with them. Sarah also used logos when she told me that dancing and singing were good stress relievers. Lastly, Sarah used logos by saying I would be able to add ‘theatre’ to my list of freshman year activities. Sarah used logos to back her pathos arguments, since she knew I am a logical person. Sarah also used ethos to persuade me to audition. Since Sarah was my best friend, she knew that I would listen to her more than anyone else. She also knew that I would feel worse about letting her down as opposed to anyone else. Sarah’s use of ethos was effective in persuading me to audition even though she didn't use it on purpose. Overall, Sarah’s combined use of rhetoric techniques was effective in persuading me to audition. Although I was very hesitant to audition, she gave many arguments that I hadn’t thought of before. I didn’t think that the musical could have been a good bonding experience for us. I didn't think that it could be a good stress reliever.
