They both imagine death and disaster. ‘I’m seeing death everywhere this weekend’, says Nick, and Meryl’s response is ‘So do I’. When they make love for the first time, the viewer sees an animated version of what they are both imagining—their deepest fears. As the sequence continues, however, we notice that the animated images are becoming less frightening—Nick’s cancer cells shrink, for example— and thus the filmmaker suggests the healing nature of love. Towards the end of the film, when the relationship with Nick has developed and Meryl feels happy, her imaginings are less threatening. The black children in her imagination are laughing as they say ‘It was meant to be’, just as Meryl is able to laugh at herself when the car splashes her. Discovering that they have several things in common and falling in love helps Nick and Meryl to cope with their personal tragedies.
