Sarah Grimke Research Paper

Sarah Grimke was a poor soul who was struggling to find her place in society. She wants to be a jurist but her father does not want this as it is against the ideas of society and how women should act. One main reason he does this was because he did not want to hurt his image within society. “He was a judge on South Carolina’s highest court and at top of the planter class, the group Charleston claimed as its elite,” (Kidd 9). Mr. Grimke was a top jurist in the city of Charleston and did not want to jeopardise his votes and opinions from the people with his daughter’s ideas. With the idea of morality versus society, he was more concerned with what society thought about him than what he really believed in. In the 1800s, women were not allowed to hold prestigious jobs such as being a jurist or doctor these were considered men’s jobs. Being torn apart and leaving half of her broken while half is complete for being happy with one choice. Sarah was forced to make one decision, she either had Israel or she had her career as a minister and women’s rights activists. When he proposed to her, he made it very clear that she could only have one, “I hadn’t imagined you would want to to continue with your ambition after we married. Would you really want that?” (Kidd 288). He did not want to be with her if she wanted to pursue her career because he was worried of what people would think about him, instead of just wanting to be with her. He was more concerned that she was willing to keep her career than give it up to be with him. This is where Sarah was the opposite of society versus morality, she was willing to follow her heart and side with her morality and not care what society thought about
