Sarah Emma Edmonds was born in the year 1841 in New Brunswick, Canada. Her family was your typical farming family; Sarah was a part of a literate family and she attended Anglican parish school. Sarah enjoyed being outdoors, she grew strong working on the farm, and loved to hunt and fish. At the age of fifteen her father wanted to marry her off to a farmer much older than her, Sarah ran, with the help of her mother she started dressing like a man, cut her hair and changed her name to Franklin Thompson. Leaving Canada she ended up in New England, working as a Bible salesman and a publisher’s agent in Hartford, Connecticut.
