Sara Teasdale's Poem 'Spring In War-Time'

The poem I chose was Spring in War-Time by Sara Teasdale. This was a poem from World WarⅠin 1915. The overall theme of this poem is that, how can happiness fill up hearts while dealing with grief? The grief would be the death of the soldiers who died in battle. Teasdale is trying to make us realize that dealing with a death is hard even when good things are heading our direction. Love is the strongest thing in the world and when one half of it’s gone you start to doubt in it. “Oh, how can spring take heart to come To a world in grief, Deep grief?” (s.1) The question being asked in that statement is, how can happiness fill up hearts while dealing with grief? Teasdale asked questions after every stanza to question people's feelings and to make them realize the hard times that the women were going through. “How can the daylight linger on For men to fight, Still fight?” (s.2) This is asking that why are the days so long maybe it's for the soldiers to keep on fighting? “How can it have the heart to sway Over the graves, New graves?” (p.3) This part of the poem is asking why people put graves over graves after the grass has grown long. “But what of all the lovers now Parted by Death, Grey Death?” (p.4) This is saying that hearts have been broken because of the death of their …show more content…
This is because Teasdale was trying to flip the poem over. Instead of telling the readers how she felt she wanted people to feel how many felt in the 1915’s. Especially when she asked “Under the boughs where lovers walked The apple-blooms will shed their breath- But what what of all the lovers now Parted by Death, Grey Death? (s.4) The tone of this story is sad. This is because Sara teasdale is explaining what she has been through in her life. She explains her sorrow in the first stanza. “ I feel the spring far off, far off, The faint, far scent of bud and leaf- Oh how can spring take heart to come To a world in grief, Deep

The men were so brave to go into battle and risking their lives. Many of them knew that they would not likely live once seeing and hearing the horrific acts of war. Soldiers were not receiving the deaths they deserved the poem talks about and it shows the unselfish act taken by the men to fight for their country. “The venerable woods--rivers that move In majesty, and the complaining brooks that make the meadows green; and, poured round all, old ocean's gray and melancholy waste,-- are but the solemn decorations all Of the great tomb of man.” Images of graves, tombs, and coffins are all over this poem and because of this readers have dark images. The poem talks about a couch “Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.” The poem ends with an image of not being afraid of death. People should think of death as something wrapping yourself in a blanket, being comfortable and having a dream-filled sleep.…

In the Spoon river Anthology, Edgar Lee Masters develops regret in his poems, Richard Bone, Doc Meyers, and Mrs. Merrit. Throughout the whole book regret is shown in almost every poem, but the three I listed above are the strongest ones. The first poem I picked was Richard Bone. This poem is about the guy that carves the epitaphs in the headstones. At first he didn't know what to think about his job, it seemed odd to him what some of the people brought him to write.…

Life is not easy and is a constant struggle. Claude Mckay’s most well-known novel, The Harlem Renaissance, was the most momentous event in African American cultural life in the twentieth century. Before the Harlem Renaissance, the African Americans were not free to express themselves completely, but this movement changed that. It affected politics, music, visual arts, and social development (Wiley). This novel led him to write the poem “After the Winter”, which is a poem with an inspirational and optimistic outlook on the world.…

“Death of a Young Son by Drowning” by Margaret Atwood tells the very vivid story of a mother’s son’s death. The tone used by the author was reflective, happy, and yet still sorrowful. Atwood sort of describes the son’s death as an adventure, giving the poem a happy and optimistic tone. She uses words that make it seem almost like a journey, for instance in line 4 she uses “voyage,” in line 25 “long trip,” and line 13 “reckless adventurer,” that make it seem almost exciting. There is also a shift in tone in lines 16-18 when she says, “There was an accident; the air locked, he was hung in the river like a heart.…

The two poems I 've chosen are Valentine and Mean Time by Carol Ann Duffy. The poems come from the collection 'Mean Time ' and both have themes of love, loss and regret. The title 'Valentine ' has strong connotations with love and lust however the opening line is a contradiction to this. This line is alone to show this isn 't a generic story and adds to the love as it shows they have a connection where love isn 't stereotypical, it 's strange and different to what most people know love to be. The structure in general is haphazard but every stanza, including the single lines, have an end stop.…

It is mainly a story that is used to catch the readers’ attention. Two young, carefree lovers make love in the clover fields and then walk home on this once magical walking trail that now seems to be old and abandoned. The second stanza, which began as a story of the past, reverted to the future in line 15, where it said, “Now they are gone for good.” (line 15). This sudden shift in time comes as a shock to the reader, who was enjoying a blissful description of the walking trail just moments ago.…

This induces related thoughts in the reader, causing them to recall that in times of great distress, the well-being of their own psyche (Heart) depends on the ability of their mind (Head) to console it through rational thought. These two sections of the poem echo the overall theme: that all will experience great loss over the course of their time on Earth, and in these times of loss, the mind must assume the role of consoler to the spirit so that it may recover to its natural…

Lispector calls attention to many individual reactions, yet two noted receptions of Little Flower echo the emptiness of love and silence. The shorter of the two reads, “In another house, in the consecration of spring, a girl about to be married felt an ecstasy of pity: ‘Mama, look at her little picture, poor little thing! Just look how sad she is!’ ‘But,’ said the mother, hard and defeated and proud, ‘it’s the sadness of an animal. It isn’t human sadness.’…

The second stanza is proof that nature has a main part in describing the character and maybe even the meaning the poem. “The leafy boughs on high”, means the “main” part of the branch, resaying nature is the main branch of the poem. The second stanza also has the evidence that the character is depressed. “Hissed in the sun” Hissed mean a sharp note but can also mean displeasure. Figuring out that hissed could mean displeasure, resaying it would be” displeasure of the sun”…

In the incredible ode, “To Autumn”, John Keats uses the literary devices duality and personification to capture the audience’s attention. He talks about the differences in autumn and it becomes clear that no matter the scale of revolt, or whatever happens, the cycle of life will continue endlessly. This is obvious when one looks at the phrases in each stanza, which makes the slight contrasts Keats’ uses purposeful. By looking at duality and personification, we can see the major differences in the phrases and the stanzas; this is important because John Keats magnificently exemplifies that all good things must eventually end as it’s a common cycle to all living on earth.…

Sonnet 73 by William Shakespeare is also referred to as “That time of year thou mayst in me behold”. This poem is most likely written for a lover or a young friend, though the interpretation varies with the reader. Throughout sonnet 73, Shakespeare leads the reader through the loss of his youth and passion, ending with the loss of his life. It explores the toll that time takes on the body, one’s youth, and love. His goal is to show the one the poem is addressed to that time runs out and everyone dies eventually and that it is important to show affection for loved ones while they are alive.…
