The Alchemist is about a shepherd named Santiago from a town in Spain, who has a recurring dream about a treasure buried next to the pyramids of Egypt. He meets a man who claims to be the King of Salem, telling Santiago that his Personal Journey is to search for his treasure. The king gives Santiago two stones called Urim and Thummim, which will help him in his times of need. On his journey, he meets an Englishman who introduces him to alchemy. They stop in Al-Fayoum to avoid any interaction with a present war. There Santiago meets Fatima, a woman he claims to have loved before knowing of her existence. Spending time with her made Santiago feel, for the first time, the desire to stay in one place forever. Santiago was about to go to her again and propose to marry her, but then he ran into the king of Salem. Meeting Fatima, he said that he had loved her before he knew she existed and she said to him that he needs to find his Personal Journey and that if he really loved her, he would come back. In the quote, it says, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his destiny”. His love for the merchant’s daughter is not love, but is just an adventure that led to his fate. he would have never found Fatima or listened to his dream if he went to the girl. It was for Fatima’s love that he continued to embark on his journey. The difference between true love and love experiences is that true love will never stand in the way of one’s destiny; it will just become apart of that destiny.

Santiago represents all humans and their journeys to their missions in life. He brings out reality in an unbearingly irresistible fantasy.
