It was named a “defence of honor’ which was upheld by the court. The Vicario brothers killed him to save their family's honor after Anglea named Santiago as the man who took her virginity. The men declared they would have done it again a thousand times over the same reason, honor. while the Vicario brothers seem most at fault because they killed Santiago, it was Angela who named him as the man who deflowered her. Pablo and Pedro defend their family with a statement that was upheld in good faith. “The thesis of homicide in legitimate defence of honor” Marquez 15. In addition, the court agreed that the reasoning behind the murder had to do with the honor of a family, and that was an article worth killing over. In addition, had Angela not given a name, she would be viewed a dishonest girl who was incapable of remembering who seized her own virginity. Therefore, the Vicario brothers perceived that it was necessary to protect their family from the damage that their sister had

In her book, The Hunting Season: Immigration and Murder in an All-American Town, Mitra Ojito describes in detail the story of the murder of Marcelo Lucero, who was murdered after being cornered by a group of teenage boys in a small town in New York. Starting with the title itself and continuing throughout the entire book, Ojito employs comparison and contrast to establish characters, set the tone, and present every side of this terrible situation. Though the situation perhaps begs for a scapegoat, for a villain, someone to place blame on and dismiss in order to avoid digging deeper, Ojito refuses this option and instead commits, mainly through the use of juxtaposition, to a truthful examining of the years of hatred, misconceptions, and opposing…

The virtual image for his case was the idea itself that was planted into Hernandez’s mind. The fact that the police “suggested” (Leung), or in other words, planted, the idea of the possibility for making a crime doubtlessly must be considered immoral. However, the law clearly states that the policemen are allowed to deceit the suspect for the purpose of acquiring the suspect’s confession. Now the question is back at whether these situations should be justifiable or not. The most uneasy part of the fear of the unknown is simply because of the fact that it is…

It is odd how the police don’t treat rich higher class people the same way they would treat anybody else who are not high class. Many people found it odd how it took over two months before the police finally decided to investigate the two brothers. One question that still puzzles me personally is what could have possibly cause two brothers to want to kill their parents? Yes, the brothers had their way with the law and their parents, but even that wouldn’t convince a normal person to kill their parents. In this paper, we will go through the minds of the two brothers before the murder, the night of the murder, and the aftermath of the murder.…

Although defiance was a factor itself, there were also many other factors that influenced the unspoken decision of keeping the information they discovered, the motive of the murder, to themselves. “A Jury of Her Peers,” written in 1917, illustrates the role of women in the early nineteenth century to be very different than the role they play in today’s…

¨I was in another world, confused and terrified by my own violence, grateful that Pedro Tercero had escaped because I knew if he had fallen to the floor I would have continued striking him with the axe till I killed him… I've never killed anyone, and the closest I came to doing so was the day I picked up an axe and threw myself at Pedro Tercero Garcia” (Allende 207). His immediate regret is a result of him realizing that his violence is mindless and misguided, something Esteban Garcia never grasps. Garcia’s goal is strictly violence against those he sees oppressing him. While Esteban Trueba is terrified by his attack on Pedro Tercero, Garcia is fascinated by the attack of his own family member.…

In our interactive oral we discussed the topic of familismo and machismo in Latin American culture which were prevalent in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold. During the discussion, my understanding of the characteristics and obligations of familismo and machismo significantly enhanced. In Latin American society familismo is a prominent practice where an individual’s family would come before that individual’s needs or wants. In the novel we can see this idea coming to play with the character Angela Vicario, where she was pressured to marry a man she had little knowledge of and detested for the sake of her family, before acquiring this knowledge I had little understanding of the reasons why Garcia-Marquez felt that it was…

In the novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Marquez befuddles both the narrator and readers with his jarring lack of chronological order by utilising foreshadowing and irony. This sharp change from traditional novella structure allows Marquez to have his readers learn more about Nasar’s murder as they read on and keep them hooked, whilst simultaneously leaving room for plenty of unsolved mysteries. The structure of the novella contributes to highlighting the oddness of Santiago Nasar’s death and enforces the idea of Santiago Nasar’s death being inevitable, despite it being entirely preventable. Chronicle of a Death Foretold is chock full of foreshadowing, straying from traditional foreshadowing with a more blatant approach. Like a broken record, the motif of “on the day he was going to die” or “it was the last time they saw him” remains constant throughout the novella despite its scattered timeline.…

As the Vicario brothers murder Santiago because "it was a matter of honor" (Márquez 56). Honor ties in with machismo because in order for a man to be machismo they must have honor. Also, honor is a social expectation and is mandatory to a have and if a man did not have honor then they would have been…

The reason is that, people who live in large cosmopolitan cities tend to react more normally to sex before marriage. Moreover, in a large city the chances that others would hear about one woman’s premarital sex would be minimal because as the name calls, big cities are home to millions of people. Even if one’s actions were known in such a cosmopolitan city as New York, honour killings are not a common way of dealing with any possible family disgrace, and if the brothers’ intentions had been openly expressed, somebody would probably have done something to stop the murder from happening. To sum up, the plot development in literary works is highly dependent on the setting. Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a good example to this.…
