Set in Andalusia, Spain, Santiago travels across the land as a shepherd with a herd of sheep. He stops to spend a night in an abandoned church in the desert, with a sycamore tree growing inside. On the ride, Santiago notices the similarity between the Englishmen view on the Soul of the World, and Melchizedek’s. The ride throughout the desert slowly becomes strenuous due to the passing rumours of tribal wars. However, they managed to reach the oasis without harm, and decides to stay there until the war is over. The Englishmen and Santiago both look for the Arab alchemist, asking various people for his sites. Along the way, Santiago meets Fatima, and instantly falls in love with her. He gives him a portion of the gold, and bears farewell to Santiago. Santiago finally reaches the Pyramids of Egypt, and begins to dig at a spot where a scarab beetle scurried out of. As he digs, several thieves finds Santiago and confronts him on his shoveling. They beat him and force him to continue digging, eventually causing Santiago to reveal his dream. After listening to his dream, the thieves came to conclusion that Santiago had no money, and started to leave. Before leaving, the leader tells Santiago about his own delusional dream, how treasure was buried underneath a sycamore tree in an abandoned church. Santiago begins to understand where the treasure was originally located, and returns back to the abandoned church in Spain. Digging under the sycamore tree, he finally finds a chest filled with treasure, and plans to return to Al-Fayoum to reunite with
