In the novel, the alchemist, by Paulo coelho, Santiago has many different mentors throughout his journey who help home to keep moving forward in order to succeed in fulfilling his destiny.

Santiago sees things the merchant that he is not comfortable with. One thing in particular is the merchants inability to change. Santiago begins to question in his mind that change is good. On the other hand the merchant fights change. This is expressed when the merchant states,"I don't want to change anything because I don't know how to deal with change"(coelho 60). This proves the merchant is making Santiago look at the possibilities in his life and the things he can accomplish he will change. Another important lesson the merchant teaches Santiago is if a person does not realize his personal legend early enough he will be to afraid to do it later on. The merchant states,"I'm afraid if my dream is realized there's no reason I'm living"(coelho 57). This shows the merchant did not peruse his dream early enough and at this point in the merchants mind it is to late and he prefers to just dream about it. Next the merchant is set on the way his shop looks. He likes the size and the contents he does not want to change a thing. Even though there are many possibility to grow his shop and become wealthy he would prefer to keep things how they are. He explains to Santiago,"I know the things I should be able to accomplish, and I don't want to so"(coelho 60). This proves how strongly he wants to not change but it courses Santiago to want to change.
