The king of Salem explains to Santiago about the “mysterious force” that eventually makes people believe that it’s impossible to achieve their dreams, “It’s a force that appears to be negative, but actually shows you how to realize your Personal Legend. It prepares your spirit and your will, because there is one great truth on this planet: whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it’s because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It’s your mission on earth”. Learning about this new “mystery force” Santigo would push past all that is against him to get to his treasure because he now knows that the force only appears to be negative and is not really negative. In all reality it pushes the person to see if they really want to achieve their personal legend enough to be able to get past all the obstacles. The Boy, Santiago, has many teachers along the way in his journey to find his personal legend. They all offer very constructive life lessons to the boy, for example the gypsy teaches the boy to follow his dreams, even if they seem wild. I know this because at first he was very cautious in believing what the gypsy had to say because he thought she was kind of strange and he had heard so many rumors of gypsies that steal away young children. The King taught the boy to never give up even when things get rough and you feel like quitting. Every time the boy would have confusion, he would take out the sacred stones that the King gave to him to interpret the omen’s, and he would be reminded of something that the King had said, which would help guide…

They are considered his teachers because they taught him lessons during his shepherd life and during his journey to the pyramids. The lesson that the king taught the boy was “The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.” The king taught Santiago this through a story he told him about a wise man and a boy who was sent by his father to learn about the secret of happiness.…
