The first "teachers" are his sheep; they play a big part in how he looks at life when he is a shepherd. Towards the beginning of the story Santiago mentions that he learns from his sheep and vice versa. His sheep depend on him, “They trust me, and they’ve forgotten how to rely on their own instincts, because I lead them to nourishment”. The king of Salem explains to Santiago about the “mysterious force” that eventually makes people believe that it’s impossible to achieve their dreams, “It’s a force that appears to be negative, but actually shows you how to realize your Personal Legend. It prepares your spirit and your will, because there is one great truth on this planet: whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it’s because that desire originated in the soul of the universe.
