Last year, I had the chance to work with an organization called Santa’s Little helpers. It's an organization that raises gifts to give to children in orphanages, hospitals, foster care, ect. For my leadership project, I decided to collect donations from the Trumbull Food Pantry. To organize it, I went on Trumbull’s town website home page to get a list of the most needed items from the pantry. From there, I was able to talk to my mom and her administration assistant to put a box in their office so people could drop off their donations. To inform people about this, I drafted an email and my mom sent it out from her work email address with everyone on her team in it informing them about what I was doing and what donations the Trumbull Food Pantry was asking for. My mom’s work team was involved, my mom was involved, I was involved, and the Trumbull Food Pantry, specifically Jennifer Gillis and Monica Valejo in the Social Services Department,…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

For the most part growing up in a middle class family and in a fairly small town like Saginaw makes it easy to think that everyone else is just as financially stable as your family. This can lead to the mind set that really low income families live in a different city, state, or even a different country. Sometime it takes the holidays to realize that families who have trouble to provide necessities for living live right in your community, and can't financially afford to provide a dream Christmas for their children which provides hope through their struggles. The importance of understanding this and then applying action is highly encouraged through programs such as The Salvation Army's angel tree of which I've taken a part of, and applied to…

Homelessness has become an epidemic in America. It is a situation that is dismissed and ignored because people like to blame the homeless for their own dismay. People like to state that homelessness is a result of laziness and all they need to do is get a job. I never had to worry about whether I was going to have food on the table or a place to sleep. I have been fortunate enough to live a life where I have everything I need to live comfortably.…
