Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, commonly referred to as La Martorana, is the next place to most certainly should visit. It’s famed for its astonishing 12th-century mosaics and was originally designed to function as a mosque.

The architectural concept features three different architectural styles due to it changing allegiances over the centuries. The best time of the day to visit is first thing in the morning; when sunlight illuminates the magnificent Byzantine mosaics. Inside you will see pictures representing Jesus Christ and the archangels and some Arabic influences. A mosaic of George of Antioch and Roger II were rescued. There is also Byzantine mosaics.

A Benedictine nun, Eloisa Martorana, got the church as it was completed. She later established
