Santa Cruz Residential Recovery Case Study

Santa Cruz Residential Recovery is part of the larger organization Encompass Community Services, an organization that is more of an amalgamation of smaller organizations united under one umbrella organization. Encompass Community Services and all of its various programs serve the local Santa Cruz county area, which includes westside Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Aptos, Capitola, Live Oak, Soquel, and Twin Lakes. The majority of the services offered take on a patron-client type relationship as is typical of most non-profit organizations. The specific program I will be working with, Santa Cruz Residential Recovery, has an interesting patron-client relationship as the clients live in the facility full time and essentially treat it as their own home -- they clean, cook, and partake in typical household duties as part of their recovery plan. The staff are there acting as mentors in most situations, often playing the part of a close friend -- in a professional sense -- along with leading traditional individual and group therapy sessions. …show more content…

The treatment offered by Santa Cruz Residential Recovery falls under what Encompass Community Services calls Community Recovery Services and those services are advertised as “low cost, high quality care” (Community Recovery Services). However, when looking at pamphlets offering more information when I visited the facility for the first time, I discovered that Santa Cruz Residential Recovery does not accept any forms of insurance. Clients are expected to pay out of pocket. And while promising that no one would be turned away for lack of funds, the premise of not accepting insurance already provides a huge financial barrier for many in the local Santa Cruz
