Sanj took a deep breath and pressed submit. The application for her awaiting trip to Dominican Republic had been sent to the organization Rustic Pathway. Her heart started beating rapidly as if she had completed a marathon. Her eyes were entranced by the scenic photos of Dominican Republic. Her smile stretched from ear to ear. In a few weeks, she will be leaving her suburban home and begin her nine days’ exotic journey. Sanj’s international travels only had been to India and England with her parents, but never to a foreign country to do service work with people she had never met before. Her trip to India was canceled last minute so she wanted an adventurous alternative. She was determined to try a trip offered by Rustic Pathway.

This is such a special group to me,” Sanj stated.
On the last day of the trip, Sanj couldn’t believe the trip was ending. She was having such an amazing time in the Dominican Republic that she didn’t realize time was flying by so quickly. That night, Sanj and Haley stayed up until 4 in the morning conversing with one another. They talked about everything they can since it might be the last time they will have a conversation like that. Sanj wasn’t able to sleep with ease knowing that she had to leave all of this behind.
When they arrived at JFK airport that afternoon, Sanj was still not able to grasp the fact that her trip was over. As she waited to pick up her baggage with Hailey, tears started forming in her eyes. When she called her parents to pick her up, she burst out into tears. Sanj didn’t know why she had cried, maybe it was because she finally got a hold of reality. The trip ended and she was going home. Her two close friends from the trip, Haley and Nate, were going their separate ways back to Colorado. She then discovered a feeling that she had never felt before.
“I had never known a group of people for nine days and ended up missing them a lot. I was scared to never see them again,” Sanj

At times, among stray dogs, dance music down the street, and strangers walking in the middle of the night, the house really did seem like a fortress. This was an area of town that wasn’t great, but was part of an emerging middle class in the Dominican Republic. These people were mostly small business owners and semi-skilled workers, although we didn’t get to meet any of neighbors. That night, a nice surprise, was food from a local pizza shop.…

Travelling is inevitably a change from routine, a break or perhaps even freeing for some. With the right amount of romantic evocation, attractions and plenty of nature’s sceneries, anything beautiful can undermine the reality when it is written on paper. “A Small Place” by Kincaid seeks to challenge this very notion by revealing a darker side of tourism, a dimension that looks beyond Antigua as a tourist locale. Behind a romanticized narrative of Antigua reveals the challenges of post-colonialism and the ways in which servility to power creates a disfiguring illusion for tourists. While a travel guide may provide enough basic information about a place, more often than not, it undermines reality and leaves out the very direness of the situation.…

The fire was dwindling as the last words of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” were sang. Although it wasn’t the most mellifluous sound, the lyrics were still rhapsodic, completely filled with passion. I leaned towards one of my many beloved roommates from the past two weeks at camp, checking her features to see if she was crying as I was. Unsurprisingly, her tear-stained cheeks were glistening from the minimal sunlight still grasping onto the far end of Burt Lake that algid Friday evening. It was later in the summer, and August was right around the corner.…

Four years ago, my life took a path I had not imagined. I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and help indigenous Mayans in some of the most poverty stricken regions. Now this may sound like an ordinary service trip to travel internationally and give charity to a stranger and feel good about yourself, but the experience was much more. Yes, I built stoves in homes, handed out water filters, food, chickens, and participated in eye clinics; but the immersion and interaction within their culture proved to be life changing, even despite a complicated language barrier. Like most children, I had many aspirations of future career possibilities such as an engineer or astronomer while growing up.…
