A survivor is somebody that stays alive during an experience that kills many people. One quality that survivors possess is perseverance. Perseverance means “steady persistence in a course of action… especially in spite of difficulty” (Dictionary.reference.com). It means to always try your hardest, even if you might fail. Real-life survivor Eric Berry shows perseverance. Berry is a football player that was diagnosed with lymphoma. He had to go through chemotherapy that left his body weak. While most people would do nothing when they are weak, Berry worked out in between treatment sessions. When he faced a challenge, Berry kept fighting. Berry’s hard work physically and psychologically paid off, and he survived cancer. Berry’s hard work helped him recover and get back to playing football. Another characteristic that survivors need is courage. Courage is the quality of facing difficulty or danger without fear (dictionary.reference.com).

Often times in stories, arrogance can lead to a character going headlong into the face of danger when the clear outcome is death. In Richard Conell’s short story, The Most Dangerous Game, the author uses portrays the protagonist Rainsford as an arrogant and confident character who is too confident in his abilities. The author uses elements of indirect characterization to show the protagonist, Rainsford, and his growth into a dynamic character. The protagonist, Rainsford, is a dynamic character due to the events that unfold in the story where he is involved and active in contributing to the story’s plot.…

Your life has purpose, your story is important, your dreams count, your voice matters, you were born to make an impact. The main theme in the short story The Most Dangerous Game written and published by Richard Connell is that all things considered life or living is to be respected and sustained. The proof for this the main character Rainsford is at first cruel and disrespectful to animals by hunting them. Later Rainsford is ruthlessly dropped into the animal's role in a twisted blood curdling hunt; due to that Rainsford uses the horror he went through to have much more respect for life in general. To back this claim in the end Rainsford defeats General Zaroff the ruthless man, who has zero respect for human and animal life.…

The setting of “The Most Dangerous Game” takes place mostly on Ship Trap Island in the 1900s era, where General Zaroff lives and carries out his horrific games. The novel's setting makes the story much more interesting for the reader, as the dense jungle environment provides the perfect place for unexpected twists and turns. If the story, say, took place in a desert, Zaroof would be able to easily track and kill Rainsford, though the story takes place in a jungle, making the hunt difficult and therefore more enjoyable to the…

A Good Rewrite is Hard to Find In his short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell tells the thrilling story of a skilled hunter named Rainsford, who washes up on a mysterious island where he falls captive to General Zaroff, a psychopathic man that preys on “the scum of the earth” simply for the thrill and excitement of the hunt. Connell builds suspense throughout the story through his use of dialogue and character behaviour. Richard Connell predominantly uses character interactions to build suspense as the plot progresses, utilizing dialogue to create a mysterious tone and to foreshadow the predicaments that Rainsford will soon find himself in. During the conversation between Whitney and Rainsford on the yacht, Whitney tells Rainsford that he felt an oddly distinct chill while sailing past the supposedly cursed island, even though "there was no breeze [and the] sea was as flat as a plate-glass window" (Connell 2).…

Thomas Wolfe’s The Child by Tiger and Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game both take a look at the result of a deteriorating mindset of two strong men. The stories are written in a way that give us a small glimpse into the tainted mindset of two very different individuals and the outcome of that deterioration. Although written in different styles, with dramatically different characters both stories have common characteristics. In The Child by Tiger, one man hides his mental struggle behind the soft spoken and soft natured façade of “Shepperton’s new Negro man” but in the end he can hold on to the mild mannered man that he portrayed.…

In a mysterious game of hunter and prey, Rainsford finds himself forced to fight for his life from Zaroff. Eventually, he does make it out alive, but not without revenge. This is the best short story I have read recently because it makes everything seem real and relates to some other stories. For example, it relates to The Hunger Games a lot because it is a situation where children are hunting for a sport, like Zaroff hunts people for a sport. This story relates to real life, like wars, because during a war innocent people are dying and humans attack other humans, like in this story.…

He didn’t want to take part in the hunt, but he knew he had to do whatever it took to defeat Zaroff because he didn’t want to die such a shameful death, but more importantly, beat Zaroff at his own game. Trying to maintain his civility, Rainsford had to play Zaroff’s game in order to survive. This conflict between man versus man was very tense. Both men wanted to deem themselves as the ultimate hunter and did whatever they could to win the hunt. Coming from two men sitting at the dinner table eating, now, to two men in the jungle trying to kill each other is very dramatic and illustrates the overwhelming conflict between man versus man in “The Most Dangerous Game.”…
