“I am still a beast at bay”, says Rainsford. This quote means that basically the fight is not over yet. The game is not over yet, so Rainsford will do everything it takes to win. Rainsford will defeat Zaroff since he is now the prey hunted. He is in the wild and will never be safe unless he conquers Zaroff. Rainsford feels as if hunting animals is not his hobby anymore because it is manslaughter. He now wants to escape Ship-Trap Island, but Zaroff will not let him and he is now being the man hunted. Since he is now being the one hunted he knows that he must assemble some adjustments. Rainsford’s preference of the game was that he had to play multiple different animals in order to win. He began by making intricate loops like a fox so General Zaroff can get lost. He did it over and over again until he felt as if he had done enough. “A big tree with a thick trunk and outspread branches was nearby, and, taking care to leave not the slightest mark, he climbed up into the crotch, and, stretching out on one of the broad limbs, after a fashion, rested.” Rainsford is now disguising himself as if he is a cat. He thought that if he could climb like a cat and hide up in the tree that Zaroff would never imagine to look there. He also felt as if he was secure up in the tree where the limbs could hide him inconspicuous. However, although he thought he felt secure, Rainsford could not get any sleep. He had a couple of restless nights where he was discouraged that General Zaroff would find and defeat him. Eventually, Rainsford had to make another move so that he is not found. “Rainsford’s impulse was to hurl himself down like a panther, but he saw that the General’s right hand held something metallic—a small automatic pistol.” Zaroff had discovered where Rainsford had been hiding. His first instinct was to kill Rainsford with a pistol as if he were an animal being hunted. Rainsford knew no matter how much he hurled General was not going to let him win. At last, General Zaroff had killed Rainsford, but Rainsford knew that he was still “a beast at bay”.
In conclusion, Rainsford is still the champ in my eyes. He showed that he will not back down from General Zaroff’s challenge even if it took more effort. Although Rainsford knew he lost he still did not give it away how he managed his ideas and not confide in them. General is now sleeping in a very furnishing
