Sangaree Childhood Accidents

I have lived in the Sangaree subdivision for four years. The Sangaree subdivision is one of the largest subdivisions in our state. It is a wonderful community with neighbors that care about their homes and other neighbors. We are extremely lucky to have Sangaree Elementary School and Sangaree Intermediate School located next to each other. However, this causes traffic problems as the schools begin and end at the same time, not to mention that Sangaree Middle School is just blocks away. The Sangaree Elementary School and Sangaree Intermediate School have had multiple pedestrian involved accidents which have lead to personal injuries, and property damage; therefore, it is time our community received an elevated crosswalk to help protect …show more content…
Not only have these accidents not decreased, these accidents involve children crossing the street, with the help of a school crossing guard and a police officer, while they are trying to get to school or leaving school in the afternoons. The school crossing guard was one of the pedestrians hit last school year. The school crossing guard was injured and as a result of her injuries was out of work for six weeks. Several children have been hospitalized for days due to their injuries from these accidents. There has also been property damage to the fence and school landscaping in regards to these dangerous accidents. Something needs to be done before a person is killed on this street. I do not know how I would feel if someone was killed on this street when it could have been …show more content…
There is a similar crosswalk on Dorchester Road by Goodwin Elementary School. This crosswalk was built back in the early 1980's because the road was extremely busy and this sidewalk kept their children safe while walking to and from school. I believe it will do the same for our children. Our elevated sidewalk would be similar in structure. The children would walk up the side of the elevated crosswalk, over the traffic, then back down the other side of the crosswalk. This elevated crosswalk will have a gate all around the sides and top so the children would be safe going across the crosswalk. There would not be any danger as far as the children being able to fall over the sides of the crosswalk. We would also still use the crossing guard and police officer to ensure the safety of our children as well as the proper flow of traffic. This will eliminate the children from coming into close contact with a vehicle or the busy street. The children will begin to walk up the side of the crosswalk well before coming close to the busy road and when they descend the crosswalk they will be past the dangerous street. This is the best solution to ensure that our children are safe while they are walking to and from our local schools. The elevated sidewalk will eliminate pedestrian involved accident and injuries and protect our children as well as the community. The need to

Another implication of this study is that Lowell will be more age-friendly if older adults feel safe enough to walk around the City. The safer it is for people to walk in the community, the more willing people are to walk. In terms of walkability, the high score Lowell has of 77 suggest that Lowell is age-friendly as it is very walkable; however, there are improvements that can be made to the pedestrian environment to encourage walking in Lowell. Sidewalks need to be made more walkable; there needs to be more lighting at night; during snow weather, plowing the sidewalks should be prioritized; public transportation should be more reliable, affordable and frequent; specialized transportation should be made available for disabled people; bus stops and stations should be made more convenient, more frequent and more safe; pedestrian crossings should be sufficient in number and safe for people with different levels and types of disability, with nonslip markings, visual and audio cues and adequate crossing times; cycle paths should be made separate from pavements and other pedestrian walkways. Steps like this can ensure a community is more age-friendly and more walkable.…

An example of what is happening is a case that involved Roy Middleton, a sixty year old man was shot at fifteen times for car theft but was actually mistaken. Luckily thirteen of them were misses, and not even knowing about the situation they shot the car and injured Mr.Middleton and judges found that the two deputies should not be criminally charged with wounding an unarmed man. To sum up its key characteristics, these where the road that showed a particular style of badly maintained black concrete, poor Aesthetic characteristics as in many case the “urban Furniture” was placed awkwardly into the footpath, these areas also failed in terms of safety in terms of both “social safety” because these were mainly areas between attractions and therefore apart from vehicles were relatively empty dispelling any idea of “safety in numbers” , however more interestingly the psychical issue of the pavement was very bad meaning that for elderly or disabled members of that community would be ultimately at risk if they were to walk along those stretches. However, in terms of connectivity the road surprisingly did well, possibly because the newer stretches are too small to allow bus connectivity but there were bus stop littered up most of these stretches implying that people could ultimately use to them to get to other areas, however that being said the issue with the pavement and safety would dwarfs the desire of doing so. Therefor it can be concluded that if the positive characteristic of walkability can be used to create walking behaviours, these characteristics are deeply impacting walking and therefore the ease of access…
