Drugs came to Alessandra at a young age, and liquor came at an even younger one. These were what she went to for comfort. These toxins were her savior when nothing else was. These consumables were merely temporary fixes to life’s problems. As life went on, she started to look for more permanent solutions.

Addictions began to rule her life, and would continue to for many years. Eventually, she got to the point where she knew she had to change. She knew she had to start living, so she did. Alessandra slowly started to escape her addictions, slowly started to mend relationships with her parents, and slowly started to raise a family. She married a dentist, gave birth to two boys, and adopted two girls. From her first child, Alessandra knew what type of parent she needed to be.
She wanted to make sure her kids never went through what she went through. To use a well known cliché, she wanted to be the parent her mother never was. She wanted to be there for her kids, and she was, even when their dad wasn’t.
Alessandra is my mother, and the fact that she is still with me and my siblings is my inspiration. She is always there for me, and knowing that she survived everything she went through without a parent, makes me think that I am able to survive life’s challenges with one.
