Public interest groups were also a big player in offering viewpoints about the tragedy at Sandy Hook. The two main biggest groups that voiced their opinion were the gun industry and the entertainment industry. The gun industry took the opposition to against those demanding stricter gun regulations and bans. They quickly blame the entertainment industry for the cause of this tragedy as well as other recent one. The two groups they focused on most were the movie industry and gaming industry. They said that today’s violent movies and videos games made violence with weapons seem glamourized and influenced the young adult. The entertainment industry retaliated to these claims. They said it was because of the availability of these weapons that caused the young adult to use a weapon. They backed up Joe Biden’s and overall the White House’s plan to create a gun violence task force and have stricter controls on guns being bought and sold in America. The truth that was not mentioned in the media was that the NRA and entertainment industry work together countless number of times throughout the years and even after this event. Studies show that kids who do play violent video games and watch violence movies do have more aggression than other kids. Although, no long-term research has been done with media and violence there is still a strong correlation between the two. This goes along with the use of guns as well. It is noted especially in inter-city kids that those who witness gun violence almost have a guaranteed chance of committing gun violence themselves. This is very similar to the Bobo doll studies by Bandura in 1961 where kids who witness violence done to the Bobo doll repeated the same violence on the doll. Yet, when talking about Adam Lanza, this was mainly untrue. It was well documented that he barely ever played any violent videogames in his household, his favorite game being dance dance revolution which is rated E for everyone. Also, the guns were not his but his mother’s and were all legally owned. It is also important to note while he had experience around the guns and used them before, he had no contact with actually gun violence. The only explanation for these to groups fighting then is like many other groups in times of crisis, looking for a scapegoat.
