The many responsibilities and the related stresses of individuals in the ‘Sandwich Generation’ can be devastating to an individual as well as the family. The issues with this group of people is varied and sometimes complex. The establishment of a support group will provide to them a place where the members can describe what they are going through as well as get feedback and support form others in a similar situation.
Setting the Stage
The sandwich generation is that group of people that are at the age and stage in life where they are taking care of an elderly parent and are also still responsible for one or more of there own children. This population of people in the sandwich generation typically consists of people between the ages 35-59. However, as the longevity of life increases and the current tendency for children to stay home longer, returning home or dependent on financial support from their parents this age range increases. The group of caretakers in this role consists primarily of women. They have traditionally been the ones who are the caregivers to the parents and now have the added responsibility of their children. The sessions will be set up in a way that the group can learn from one another that they are not alone in their situation and that there are ways of surviving in this environment. The sessions will be done in a way that emphasizes the positive and will work towards methods of resolving conflicts and reducing stress. I will not let the group sessions evolve into bitching sessions or a session of my problem is bigger than your problem. The individual’s goals and the group’s goal will mesh and be congruent with the objective of learning new coping skills and reducing
