Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi (Sandro Botticelli) was an Italian painter in the beginning of the Renaissance. His work predates some other famous artists such as Raphael or Michelangelo. Born March 4, 1445, Botticelli was the son of a tanner and was originally trained as a goldsmith. It was not until he met Fra Filippo Lippi that Botticelli learned to paint. In 1470, Botticelli was an independent master for his creation of the Fortitude that completed the series of Seven Virtues. Botticelli’s artistic style includes Neo-Platonism which incorporates both paganism and christiantiy. This is one of the reasons Botticelli was such a popular artist in his time. By 1460, Sandro Botticelli already had his own personal studio. Botticelli’s talent was recognized when he was asked to paint for the Sistine Chapel.

Botticelli became less popular after he came under the influence of a Florentine monk who believed in distroying all books and art works that were not painted for God. At first, this seemed like the downfall of Botticelli, but he decided to remain in Florence and continue his legacy of being one of the greatest painters; however,he changed his subject matter so that his works had a more religious tone. He began painting altarpieces to please the monk, Savonarola. Boticelli even burned some of his own works of art to appease Savonarola. The ultimate downfall of Botticelli occurred when the style of painting changed too much too quickly. Botticelli could not adapt and, when Leonardo Di Vinci and Michelangelo began to paint, Botticelli’s fame faded. When Botticelli died in 1510, he was said to be broke and
