Everyday, as I make my way downstairs to go to my morning class, I am greeted by Sandra working on her cycle of cleaning, part of her job as custodian for student housing. Without hesitation, she beams “Hello! How are you doing?”, leaving me wonder how someone who works so hard can be so energetic in the morning. Originally from Mexico City, Sandra Ramirez was born in 1970. Sandra’s two older siblings raised her while her mother labored away all day and her father worked all night. “I didn’t see her since I was six years old.” It was an ordinary Sunday afternoon and Sandra dredded the slow decline of the sunset for it would mean she would not see her mother until next Sunday. After a day of relaxing and chores, the groceries covered every inch of the kitchen counter; enough for a week.
