A Biography Of Carl Sandburg's Arithmetic?

Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on January 6, 1878, into a poor family. His parents August and Clara Johnson, were immigrants to America from Sweden, once arriving, they changed their names from the Johnson’s to the Sandburg 's because many people at his railroad job had the same name. As a result, of lack of money, Carl was forced to leave school and work different jobs so he can support his family. After a while, he served in the Spanish-American war, while in the war he met a student who convinced Sandburg to enroll in school when the war was over. Sandburg went to a school where he drew Professor Philip Green Wright’s attention who helped Sandburg with his first published volume of poetry. Sandburg later moved to Milwaukee where he worked for a newspaper and published some of his poems. In Sandburg’s poem “Arithmetic” he talks about math importance in people 's lives and how it is used in everyday situations. In the first line of the poem, Sandburg states, “Arithmetic is where numbers fly like pigeons in and out of your head” which means that math is everywhere and people use math without even realizing it at times. In the poem, Sandburg also uses imagery, for example in lines 5 and 6 Sandburg states, “Arithmetic is seven eleven all good children go to heaven -- or five six bundle of sticks,” (Arithmetic) this allows the reader to imagine children going to a store and using math to buy themselves some candy.
