HABITAT DESCRIPTIONS
Sand Scrub: “By definition, scrubs are xeric communities growing on well-drained infertile sand formations of marine origin in both coastal and interior Florida. Evergreen or nearly evergreen scrub oaks or rosemary shrubs or both predominate in some scrubs, while in others, sand or slash pines are present, sparsely or abundantly. The scrubs in Jonathan Dickinson State Park are coastal scrubs, which grow along today’s coastal sand and are influenced by salt spray.” (Means, 2014, p. 71)
Types of Scrubs:
Rosemary scrub: “Shade is patchy. The white, sterile sand drains fast, and only drought-tolerant plants and burrowing animals can survive (Means, 2014, p. 73).”
Oak scrub: “Stressed by drought, the oaks assume twisted shapes. Since the canopy has closed, most of the groundcover plants and shrubs have been shaded out, leaving an inviting, open interior (Means, 2014, p. 73)” …show more content…
In a mature sand pine forest, the biggest trees are about 68 feet tall and 15 to 20 inches in diameter at breast height (Means, 2014, p. 73).”
Pineland Flatwood: Pine flatwoods characteristically occur in low, flat areas, on acidic, sandy soils. Depending on draining patterns, different types of pines predominate. Longleaf pine is the dominant on well-drained soils, slash pine on sites of intermediate wetness, and pond pine on poorly drained sites.
