The two works of art in focus are San José y el Niño (Saint Joseph and the Christ Child), and Cruzando El Río Bravo (Border Crossing). The first sculpture, San José y el Niño, is made of polychrome and gilded wood, and was created in Santiago de Guatemala by an unknown artist in the 18th century. As the name might imply, this statue is of Saint Joseph holding baby Jesus. This sculpture was created in veneration of him, as people “throughout Spanish America…prayed to him for a peaceful death” (Blanton Museum of Art). The second work, Cruzando El Río Bravo, is a 20th century painted fiberglass sculpture of “a Mexican man carrying a woman and infant on his back across the Rio Grande River” (Blanton Museum of Art).
