San Joaquin County Walkability Symposium For Older Adults Essay

I assisted in hosting our departments first Walkability Symposium. This symposium addressed barriers and potential opportunities to assist with older adults walking safely. Betsy Thompson, the Acting Regional Health Administrator for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in DHHS, provided opening remarks at the symposium. I worked with staff to determine content areas for sessions, and designed the breakout groups by geographic region to determine next steps. I provided information on other resources to purchase to support participants and advised. During the day of the symposium, I provided technical assistance including setting up the AV system and the venue. Fifty people representing agencies from older adults attended the event. This also led to discussion of creating a MOU with a medical center implement a senior fall prevention program and walking group modeled off of the Arthritis curriculum.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) International Walk to School Day Events
I coordinated Walk to School Day for twelve elementary schools throughout the county in our SRTS. This required contacting principals and parent liaisons to determine the date and other logistics for the event. I created promotional material including a flyer in English and Spanish.
