Since the days of the Gold Rush, San Francisco has been an important financial center. Located halfway between London and Tokyo as well as between Seattle and San Diego, San Francisco is at the center of global business. The city’s marketing theme is, “Never the same. Always San Francisco.”

The history of this island is very rich beginning with the military history, during 1850-1934 it was a Civil War fortress, an infamous federal penitentiary from 1934-1963, a bird sanctuary, the first lighthouse on the West Coast, and the birthplace of and perhaps the most influential event in the island's history, the American Indian Red Power movement occupation of 1964 and 1969-1971 it was occupied for more than 19 months by a group that saved the tribes and maybe the island too, these are just a few of the fascinating stories of what is called, the Rock.
Today Alcatraz Island is managed by the National Park Service, it has tours that go year round from the pier 33 to the island and I’ve found that the tours range from $52-$215 dollars and you would want to buy tickets way in advance these tickets sell out fast with the rich history behind …show more content…
