For the past 3 years, volunteering at a women’s shelter and their food bank and clothing donation room, I have seen a diverse range of people accessing food banks on a daily basis. Often, while searching for the items that they need, individuals disclose their heartbreaking stories. Many of them are single moms, unemployed, and recent immigrants, who must access social resources to help ends meet. It is a hardship for them to better their education or work experience, because they have responsibilities to provide for their family first, rather than themselves.…

Hunger in America is a great problem but it can be prevented and eradicated as long as the nation has the will and determination to make it happen both on a national scale. In America alone, statistics prove that one in every six individuals face hunger on a regular basis. Although there is an astonishing amount of people who face hunger, this is not because there is an insufficient supply of food available in the country, but it is because many individuals are living in poverty or below the poverty line. Rosie, a young fifth grader living in Colorado, is one of millions of children who face hunger as a result of poverty. Rosie is dependent on neighbors and friends, food stamps, numerous charities and organization and relies on any other resources that can aid her in obtaining a sufficient amount of food.…

Sometimes it’s difficult to know if and how my presentations and offers of information and handouts are being received by the clients I see at the food banks I visit. Last week at Federal Way Food Bank, I was fortunate to interact with a regular client who gave me a little insight. K welcomed me warmly, and told me she hadn’t been able to come to the food bank but once a month since her car broke down in November. She continued to share how she was able to be very frugal and prepare tasty dishes for herself and her son with food she had stored and items shopped for at her infrequent trips to the supermarket. She went on to praise me and the great recipes she received during my demonstrations.…

Statistics flashed across a screen, solemn music accompanied a slideshow of scenes showing desolate landscapes and impoverished communities. On screen, a mother held her starving child and a group of girls in mismatched clothes gathered water from a muddy well. We watched a presentation given to us before the service event and listened to the instructor as he described the conditions in other countries. He showed us photos of the people we would be helping during the mission, communities that were in desperate need of donations, supplies, and most importantly, food. The Lifeline food packing mission was my first service experience, which was the case for most of the students who participated, and it as also one of the first glimpses we had of just how bad the situations are in countries where starvation and malnutrition are so common.…

As government assistance decreased, the labour market faced changes that resulted in increased income inequality as many struggled to navigate the precarious labour market (Lewchuk et al., 2013). Canada saw an increase in poverty and food instability at this time. Paradoxically, the increased need for social assistance was met with drastic cuts to government social spending. Community and charity based organizations, such as food banks, soup kitchens and other community initiatives such as the Portland Hotel Society (Mate, 2008), emerged as a short-term response. Canada’s first food bank opened in Edmonton in 1981 and today food banks exist in 508 communities across Canada (Hurtig, 2000).…
