Throughout the years I’ve always found it easier to look at a culture and notice its unique features compared to fully understanding my own. Growing up in a rural community of Green Bay, Wisconsin presented me with minimal experiences of other cultures making this particular assignment incredibly intriguing for me. My parents grew up very poor and neither of them had much when they moved to Green Bay, both of them had to work extremely hard to get to where they are today. Because of this they have made sure to tell their stories teaching me the value of working hard. Along with this, my parents allowed me to try everything never telling me that anything was a waste of time.…

As I was contemplating my first move to resolve the situation, I knew that I would need an adult ally to achieve my purpose. My mother would have to be that person. We spent the first night of the trip in a motel in Donner, CA. The next day we continued our journey to the San Fransico Bay area, where my father had secured a job working for the railroad. The first two days in California we stayed in a nice motel, and it even had a swimming pool.…

Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

Simi Valley has only relatively recently become the city it is known as today. Prior to the 1970’s, Simi Valley had been mainly a place of groves and farmland. Also prior to that, this was the land of the Chumash which is where the word Simi originated from. While most of the people of Simi are of European descent, there seems to be a strong community of hispanic people. There are also people from Asian backgrounds, African American backgrounds, and Native American backgrounds.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

Imagine a seven-by-seven-mile metropolis, surrounded by several neighborhoods filled with homes with unique design in Presidio Heights or Nob Hill, tall office buildings in the Financial District, and amazing views of San Francisco and the Bay from the Golden Gate Bridge or Twin Peaks. As many people view San Francisco as one of the most expensive and difficult cities to live in, I like to think of it as my home away from home. It is a city of seekers and adventurers. I am a city girl and I love everything about what an urban environment can offer me. I got lost within the crowds, found small hidden spots, interacted with others around me…
