San Antonio Culture Diversity

I was raised as a Protestant Christian. I grew up in Evans, Georgia, a small town in the heart of the south and a community where most of the people believed in the same things. I knew a few Mormons, a few Muslims, and a few Catholics, but the majority of the people in my circle were either professing Protestant Christians or raised in a culture of Judeo-Christian beliefs. I’ve always enjoyed talking to people about their beliefs, especially when they differ significantly from mine, but it was hard to do this in the small southern town where I was raised. I moved away from Evans in the middle of my freshman year because my dad got a new job in San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio is one of the largest cities in the United States, and with a large population comes tremendous diversity. After I started attending public school in my new city, I encountered several changes. I saw drug transactions almost every day. I saw couples doing highly inappropriate things in the hallways. I knew gothic kids who were into some pretty crazy activities. I heard people talking about all the details regarding the alcohol, drugs, and sex at the parties they had attended. There were large numbers of people from different faiths in San Antonio: Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Catholics, Atheists, Agnostics, and Mormons to name a few. Nearly every person I encountered believed something different about the world. The transition to a place with such a diversity of beliefs was quite a life-changing ordeal. It has given me a better understanding of the world, and a realization that most people do not have the same beliefs that I do.
