On the beginning of their journey, Frodo and Sam set off on their way to Prancing Pony. Samwise Gamgee, the first one to volunteer, represents a loyal retainer. Courage to continue with Frodo shows a dedication that a loyal retainer has for the hero of their story. He risks his life several times, which includes him joining Frodo in the first place. Sam also represents a Martyr, he feels the need to protect everyone. Going with Frodo in the boat represents a commitment in his eyes because Frodo wanted to go alone. Sam insisted that he travel with him to ensure Frodo wasn’t alone. Boats represent safe travels, one of the many symbols in the book.
