Samuel Reyes: A Short Story

“I take no joy in this, and I promise Emily will die quickly, and painlessly. Take comfort in that.”
“One can only be so comforted with a gun pointed at his head, cabrón.” wheezed Samuel. The man tilted his head at that. Very few who were unfortunate enough to cross paths with him spoke to him in such a matter, let alone were allowed the opportunity to speak at all.
“I would have assumed someone as difficult to track down as you would be more careful with his words.”
“Would it make difference?” The old man chuckled, a raspy sound that came with difficulty. Whether that struggle had arisen from old age or his present condition, one could not be quite sure.
“I suppose not. Goodbye, Samuel.” There was a click as the gun’s safety was released.

In fact, she knew who he had been murdered by, and why. Samuel Reyes had once been Mexico’s greatest drug lord. He had been responsible for the trafficking of immeasurable quantities of drugs across the border into the States and across the globe, and through all of that, never made his presence known to any but those he did business with. However, Reyes’s cartel started on its path to deterioration the very second Samuel met Emily. Like out of a storybook, Reyes chose love over his business, leaving the criminal world forever in pursuit of something he believed would redeem him. Emily knew husband’s previous profession would catch up with him eventually in some form or another, the beauty of her home allowing her to remain blissfully in denial of a determined future. Nobody ever leaves a line of work such as her husband’s alive, let alone unscarred. Furthermore, rarely did the fates that belayed such people extend solely to them; their families were an undeviating part the debt collected to repay their …show more content…
As her mother’s fear edged into weariness, Camila followed suite. Emily still had no idea how she was going to break the news of Samuel’s death to her child. It hadn’t even crossed her mind; there was no space in her mind for anything other than the present.
The town of Real del Monte was much smaller than Huasca de Ocampo, its steep streets, stairways and small squares lined with low buildings, some dating back centuries. Antonio’s house was one of these antiques, a beautiful mix of English and Spanish design with high sloping roofs and a grand chimney. He was by no means as rich as his sister but he was however one of the more wealthy townspeople.
Arriving at their destination, the two family members ascended the steps to Antonio’s house. Before Emily had the chance to knock, the door was swung wide

Authors write books for many reasons - motivation, entertainment, enjoyment, education, and the list continues. All novels and short stories also contain a message to the reader called the theme and authors can create more than one theme in a novel or short story. In both “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson and “A Rose for Emily”, by William Faulkner the authors introduce many themes to the reader through conflict and interactions between characters. One main theme that both short stories share, is how tradition affects different generations. Tradition is defined as customs of beliefs that are handed down from generation to generation.…

The author uses the point of view of Miss Emily’s neighbors to demonstrate how little is known about this woman and how most of what we do know is speculation. We hear the story through the mouths of Miss Emily’s nosy neighbors, who seem to take joy in gossiping about her grim life; although, it is clear they don’t really know her at all. When Miss Emily dies the women only go to her funeral to see the inside of her house, which no one has seen in many years (Faulkner 204). The narrator describes the scene, stating, "[t]he Negro met the first of the ladies at the front door and let them in with their hushed, sibilant voices and their quick, curious glances..." (210). Her neighbors make it very clear with their actions that Miss Emily was merely…

In the story, “A Rose for Emily,” William Faulkner debates with the reader on whether or not Mrs. Emily Grierson is, in fact, mentally unstable. To begin the story, Emily Grierson has died and the “…whole town went to her funeral: the men through sort of a respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house” (Faulkner, pg. 1 para. 1).…

According to a news report from CNN by Paul A. Reyes, the Obama administration has sent out a message to illegal Central American women and children in the U.S. that soon there will be plans to start a 30-day "surge" of immigration raids. These raids are targeted to families with criminal records or law violations. According to this news report, Paul Reyes from CNN argues that the raids the Obama Administration plans on carrying out would actually do more harm to these people than the good it would do to let them stay. These raids are a result of the doubling of the number of Central American families that have been apprehended at the southern border. Paul Reyes says that “The Obama administration is making targets of women and children who should be…

Community satisfaction, especially with the community that is a marriage, is dependent on feeling equal because it establishes a sense of responsibility. Being an equal is very important in relationships and is often a reason for discord; so, developing communities that foster equality will alleviate tension by allowing both parties to express themselves. Many marriages have aspects that promote equality and some that negate it, some to the point of desiring something other than one’s partner. For this essay, I will provide and analyze quotations from both academic sources on sociology and community studies, a biography of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as well as ideas from “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World”. In this essay, “community” will refer to the subset of society that is formed through marriage and the experiences of those involved.…
