As her mother’s fear edged into weariness, Camila followed suite. Emily still had no idea how she was going to break the news of Samuel’s death to her child. It hadn’t even crossed her mind; there was no space in her mind for anything other than the present.
The town of Real del Monte was much smaller than Huasca de Ocampo, its steep streets, stairways and small squares lined with low buildings, some dating back centuries. Antonio’s house was one of these antiques, a beautiful mix of English and Spanish design with high sloping roofs and a grand chimney. He was by no means as rich as his sister but he was however one of the more wealthy townspeople.
Arriving at their destination, the two family members ascended the steps to Antonio’s house. Before Emily had the chance to knock, the door was swung wide
