John Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence and would later be elected the first governor of Massachusetts. John Jay was born in New York City on December 12, 1745. John Jay served in the Continental Congress, was a diplomat, wrote some of The Federalist Papers and became the first chief justice of the United States. He died in Bedford, New York, on May 17, 1829, at the age of 83. Alexander Hamilton was born circa January 11, 1755 or 1757 (the exact date is unknown), on the island of Nevis, British West Indies. In 1788, he convinced New Yorkers to agree to ratify the U.S Constitution. On July 12, 1804, in New York City, Hamilton died of a gunshot wound that he sustained during a duel with Aaron Burr. Patrick Henry was born on May 29 (May 18, Old Style), 1736 in Studley, Virginia. Patrick Henry was an American Revolution-era orator best known for his quote "Give me liberty or give me death." Henry was an influential leader in the radical opposition to the British government, but only accepted the new federal government after the passage of the Bill of Rights, for which he was in great measure responsible. He died on June 6, 1799, at his Red Hill home. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson who are carved on MT. Rushmore were a part of the Founding Fathers as well and was our first President of the United States. George Washington died in December 14, 1799, in Mount Vernon, Virginia. Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. He was a draftsman of the U.S. Declaration of Independence; the nation's first secretary of state (1789-94); second vice president (1797-1801); and, as the third president (1801-09), the statesman responsible for the Louisiana Purchase.
