Samsung Note7 Case Study

Group 2 has decided to analyze the Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphone. The product has become somewhat infamous over the past few weeks due to some devices spontaneously bursting into flames. The continuous issues faced by the product led Samsung to initiate a recall of all Galaxy Note7 devices. Samsung has started a refund and exchange program as well which will provide all customers who purchased this device the opportunity to exchange it for another Samsung smartphone or obtain a refund at the point of purchase (Galaxy Note7 Safety Recall and Exchange Program, 2016). In addition to the recall of the device, the United States Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration have banned air transport of the Note7 effective October 15, 2016 (DOT Bans All Samsung Galaxy Note7 Phones From Airplanes, 2016). With all of the issues facing the Note7, Group 2 will explore ways Samsung may be able to reevaluate the product and reintroduce it at another time. The Note7 was unique in the marketplace due to its large size and the inclusion of an “S-Pen” which allows users to handwrite messages and notes on the phone’s screen. The initial rush of reviews agreed the Note7 was one of the best phablets, a portmanteau of phone and tablet due to the device’s large screen and size, available on the market (Spence, 2016). One review called the device the best offering ever from Samsung, and potentially the best large smartphone ever made (Seifert, 2016). Another review listed the price as the only negative thing about the device and lauded its impressive display, battery life and security features (Heater, 2016).
