According to the Bible, Samson’s father, Manoah, was married to a barren, unnamed woman. One day, while Manoah’s wife was minding her own business, an angel appears and he tells her that she will give birth to a son. The angel also tells her that she should never cut her son’s hair because the child will be a Nazarite to God and he will deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines. After Manoah’s wife hears the words of the angel, she shares the good news with husband. While it is unclear whether Manoah believed his wife or not, the bible tells the readers that Manoah asked the Lord to send the angel again and tell them how they should take care of the child. In the fourteenth chapter of Judges, Samson encounters a young, Philistine woman and Manoah questions his son’s judgment. Nevertheless, Samson convinces his father that the Philistine woman is the perfect woman for him and Manoah journeys with him to Timnah. While in Timnah, a young lion comes out of nowhere so Samson tears the lion apart with his bare hands. Samson does not tell his parents about the lions. Days after his encounter with the lion, Samson scoops some honey out of the lion’s carcass and he shares the honey with his parents. He does not tell his parents where the honey came because he does not want to upset them. According to the thirteenth chapter of Judges, Nazarites are not supposed to eat unclean foods. It is evident that Samson does not care about following the
