The Description of a Student with a Disability The student that I observed will be identified as “Jack” for this assignment. Jack has been placed in the general education classroom for at least 80% of the school day with no anticipated removal from this general education environment according to his Individualized Education Program (IEP). His current level of writing performance is at a third grade level due to his lack of understanding the phonetic system, which affects his spelling and basic reading skills. His phonics reading level is at a second grade level due to his difficulty with decoding words. He is able to recognize and pronounce familiar words using his background knowledge; however, he struggles when having to decode unfamiliar …show more content…
He would prefer to do his work in the general classroom. He is quiet and appears to get along with everyone in the class. He seems to want to fit in with his peers and learn new concepts using the same materials as the rest of the students, which may hinder his success in some areas like reading and writing. Due to his basic reading skills falling on a third grade level, he is unable to understand and read grade level material independently. Additionally, he struggles with getting his ideas down in written form, which affects his organization, spelling, and proper mechanics. Because his disability affects his performance in class, he avoids talking in class discussions or to students about classwork. He minimally participates in group activities, which affects his collaborative and comprehensive learning skills. Gargiulo and Metcalf (2014) state that students with specific learning disabilities, such as Jack, demonstrate a “severe discrepancy between achievement and intellectual ability,” in one or more of the seven specific areas ranging from oral expression to mathematics reasoning. According to his IEP, Jack has a cognitive discrepancy between his verbal skills and his processing speed, and has a discrepancy between his full scale IQ of 102 and his performance in reading and written
