As proponents of full inclusion education systems assert, the academic integration of students with autism and other learning disabilities holds these students up to lofty but attainable standards. By exposing autistic children to general education courses, inclusive schools set virtually the same academic goals for all children regardless of intellectual challenges. When presented with an opportunity to exceed prevailing expectations, these students can conceivably demonstrate profound abilities and an expansive capacity for learning (Child Development Institute, n.d.). While special education classes establish a lenient learning pace for children with ASD, the course material may not necessarily provide students with the level of academic challenge that many autistic children are in fact capable of managing with additional assistance. These self-contained classrooms may also lack the diversity of courses that are available in mainstream divisions and are thus frequently deemed an insufficient schooling system that falls short of general education classes (The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 2013).…
Describe the challenge, issue, and/or pressure you identified: The challenge that we face as a nation is the increasing numbers of those ASD individuals who qualify for special services in school in this country. This targeted population will require instruction that takes into consideration not only the type of curriculum but the environment of the instruction, as well. Approximately 300, 000 persons in the United States have autism or display autistic behaviors and about one-third are under age 21. People with autism come from all socioeconomic classes and males are four times more likely to be affected by autism than females. People with autism can be expected to live a normal lifespan and should be treated the same as any other person or student. Matt is a 5 year old autistic male, who lives with his parents and older brother in Toronto. He was diagnosed at three with Autism Spectrum Disorder; he is nonverbal and communicates through PECS and is presently learning to sign. The assessment provided the family and intervention team information critical for setting goals for Matt. Matt’s mother is still having difficulty accepting that her son has Autism, but is willing to do anything to help him in any way that she can. Introduction During my children with exceptionalities class had Kendall college, I was able to get a glance at the different types of disabilities students have. Because of the field hours I had to complete, I had the opportunity to observe an inclusion, self-contained and resource classroom along with interviewing those teachers. While doing my observations I was able to observe a student with autism in a inclusion classroom and in a resource classroom. Interviewing with these teachers, gave me an understanding of what these teachers went through every day with their students with disabilities.…
