My visit to Costco Wholesale
I decided to visit Costco because I knew it would have a greater amount of people shopping at once than other stores near me, such as Fry’s and Safeway. This would allow me to observe a greater number of interactions with more ease. Costco is a membership-only warehouse that sells items in larger quantities than a regular grocery store. Costco claims to have lower prices as well, and they usually carry few brand options for the same product. I went to Costco on Monday at 10:00 am, which is when they open. I waited in line with about other 50 people, who like me, got there about 10 minutes before they opened. Before going to Costco I had read about gender roles in the advertisement of food. I found that the expectation of women purchasing and preparing food is still prevalent, as food is associated with women’s gender role and as a way for women to show love for their families (Parkin, 7). I was expecting to see women doing most of the grocery shopping.
While waiting in line I observed the people who were waiting as well. I noticed a couple of patterns, such as older people waiting in line. I would say most people who were waiting with me were 50 years old or older, and some of them even had white hair. There were exceptions, of course, such as a woman on her 30s and me, except I would never go to Costco on a Monday morning, except for my assignment. I think that this age pattern may be due to the time and day I went to Costco. I think people…
