Practicum – Fall 2015 Reflection - 9/16 and 9/23
I am currently doing my practicum at The Growing Tree in one of the PreK 3 classrooms. My co-operating teacher is Mrs. Naomi and TA is Ms. Diana, Room # 6.
Wednesday 9/9
On the very first day of the practicum, school was yet to start officially for children. However, there was a workshop for the teachers to attend, but the director of the school allowed me in as well. It was held by a lead teacher of the district. Soon after I came in, all the children and parents started to arrive, I observed that the teacher was there at the door meeting and greeting parents. It made me realize that when parents leave their kids, we as teachers we need to support parents and help in gaining the confidence that a child is enjoying the school day. Interaction between teacher and parent during the pickup and drop-off time helps build teacher – parents relationships. Some of the children were crying and some were crying because others were crying, teacher and TA calmed the children, by assuring them that teacher loves the child and mummy will come soon, in order to gain trust and confidence from …show more content…
On the other hand, he speaks but does not communicate. His attention or focus is also not in place and mostly he is not interested in activity teacher is doing but seems curious and explores around the class. TA sits along with the boy on the carpet for morning message; it is difficult for him to focus so sometimes teacher lets him go around the class, but teacher provides one on one time when it comes to small group activity.
I have a question, how do we make sure that these three children are gaining what others are gaining from the class and activities? Esp. the autistic child?
Teacher as now is following first 30-day book in the class. Teacher is incorporating the time to introduce various centers and things that are part of the centers. Teacher and TA were talking that they missed on one of the activity from the schedule (recall time), but decided on doing it for next day.
When I went in on 9/23, I was told that few people from the Board of Education are going to come for some verification, PAR team and lead teacher. They all came in on the same day and director had asked them to use our class to do their work. Even though our activities were not blocked in any way, Teacher told me that we will go slow and easy. I heard teacher talking to lead teacher about the three children I wrote above and asked for IEP for autistic
