Shadowing a Cardiothoracic Surgeon was my first insight into a doctor’s daily routine, where the less glamorous side to the profession was revealed through patient diagnosis and prognosis during clinics. Although this proved emotional, it was the hope provided by the doctor that inspired me the most. I also recognised the importance of honesty to ensure that patients are well informed, in alignment with Principle 4 of the NHS Constitution, of treatments proposed. This, coupled with three years in the Lyric Drama School Belfast, has enabled me to trust myself when speaking to large crowds in unfamiliar situations. My leadership skills have equally benefited from my roles as mentor and prefect of my school. I am also completing my Grade 6 piano, my fourth year in the school choir and my third year of teaching Greek on every annual European Languages Day.
I am under no illusion that Medicine won’t pose questions too challenging to even comprehend. However, instead of seeing these as insurmountable, I am excited by the unanswerable. After all, the unanswerable is what makes Medicine an ongoing learning experience. In essence, it is my empathetic character, academic motivation and my clinical experiences that have enabled me to explore the faculty of Medicine from all angles, providing a solid foundation for my decision as a future
