I do not think that I can say that this activity was 100% completed as learning and education is a continual and constant component of the nursing profession. I do feel that I made excellent use of the clinical opportunities presented to further my nursing practice. This activity continued to facilitate my learning goal of building and developing my pre-existing clinical knowledge. By discussing my assessment findings and then interpreting there meaning with my preceptors on a daily basis I was able to build strong links between assessment and pathology by using normal/abnormal findings. This activity contributed to building my nursing competence as it provided me the ability to practice my physical assessment skills to a point where I have confidence in my own findings and have no issue’s presenting these findings to the other healthcare team members (without having to have my preceptor validate them).

All 3 of my preceptors this semester allowed me to complete my own independent assessments and then present my findings to them. Then I would relay how my findings contributed and/or demonstrated underlying medical conditions. By allowing me to tell them what I thought first, versus them telling me, gave me the opportunity to actively make the links between observable assessment findings/data and the underlying pathology, which had a positive impact on my clinical knowledge and competence. Clinically competent nursing is essential to providing high-quality nursing care” (Kieft, et al. 2014) and this learning activity facilitated my development of a strong clinical practice. By learning to determine which clinical findings are of importance, I provide safe, client centred care which improves the overall quality of my nursing
