There were some barriers doing the spiritual assessment. The first barrier is I only included five interview questions. To get a complete picture of someone’s religious and spiritual worlds, and how it takes a place in their life, I believe it would take many more questions than just the five that I included for this assignment. The second barrier during my interview was patient dependent. The woman I interviewed was somewhat in limbo about what beliefs she still followed from her upbringing versus the ones she does now. Many times, when patients come into the hospital we only focus on their physical health, while in reality the patient needs a better approach, one that includes their spiritual health. The spiritual assessment allows the nurse to know what beliefs and practices the patient follows. Particular beliefs and practices can influence anything from the patient’s food preference to blood transfusions and other certain healthcare preferences. Getting the background of the patient’s beliefs can also help us understand why they do what they do and help find alternative treatments for them if necessary.
