It sounds like Gary’s confidence has taken a big knock through not having a job, so building on Gary’s self-esteem and his social skills is important. He needs to feel valued and worthy. Modelling and practising better ways to deal with anger will help him to deal with his flaring emotions. Acknowledging certain situations that fuel the anger and violence and choosing to remove himself from it is something that Gary also needs to practise and improve on.
I have a duty of care towards not only Gary and his safety, but also my own. The fact that he was threatened by his partner’s brothers is a concern. I need to ensure that he is safe from violent attacks as well as any emotional harm caused by their threats. Checking in with him via phone and giving him a number to contact can assist in assessing the danger. I also need to ensure that I am safe and, therefore, follow the guidelines of having an exit point from the counselling room and not doing home visits without following the correct protocol and taking someone with me.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is an appropriate method to use in Gary’s situation as it focuses on placing responsibility for his behaviour on him and it would teach him specific ways to change his behaviour while it also restructures him
