Mary is a 20 year-old Mexican female. She is finishing the 12th grade at the Downtown Brooklyn YABC. She attended the Boerum Hill School for International Studies located in Brooklyn, NY before she came to the YABC in fall 2017.
Referral Problem-
Right now, Mary is struggling with the balance of work, school and home life. She works from Monday through Friday 4am to 2pm. Classes start at 4:15pm and she has a hard time getting to first period because she is tired. Mary clearly looks tired and uninterested in school. If she is not attending school or work, she will be helping her Mom around the house and with younger siblings. I plan to work with her to find a balance in her life.
Background Information-
She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her Mother (Ida, age 40) and three younger siblings (Kayla, age 15/ Brian, age 10 and Nicole, age 5. Mary is the oldest sibling and her Mother depends on her to help her around the house. Mary’s Mom is fluent in

She wants to become a veterinarian. I gave her a little assignment to look up what a Veterinarian does and see if she could see herself doing that. After she did the research, she still was interested in that career. The next step was for her to look for some schools that have the degree. That took some time with her. She did not have the time to look on the computer with schedule. Therefore, I decided to sit with her to look up some schools and she was appreciative of me taking the time to help her.
In the fall semester when Mary first started seeing me, she was quiet. We met once a week usually during second period for about 20 minutes. As time went on, she started feeling comfortable with me enough to talk about her home life. She expressed that she does not have time to study because of work or babysitting her younger siblings on the weekends. I always encourage positive non-judgmental sessions with
