Data is valid whenever there is a solid foundation of well-designed research to back it up. Thus meaning, there have been a multitude of studies finding the same conclusion, or a lack of evidence against the data. The data should not be self-contradictory, and studied from multiple angles to ensure that it is well conceived. It also must be based on facts, or what is believed to be fact at the time the research is conducted. To ensure a valid response in the area of data collection, the sample must be random and large enough. For example, a sample of 100 may work with a population of 500, but would be insufficient for 1,000,000. The sample must also refrain from bias and have neutral questions as to not sway the participants.

Invalid data would be collected from samples that are too small, bias, unreliable, too specific, or a combination of these factors. It does not properly identify the ideals of the general population, making it unreliable and insignificant to research.

2. Reliable data – Test data is reliable when there is consistency with which test results occur.
